Unlock Your Full Shooting Potential
Investing time in off-ice shooting development has a profound effect on a player’s on-ice performance. By focusing on refining shooting mechanics away from the pressures and variables of a game setting, players can make significant improvements that directly translate to better performance during matches.
Enhance Shooting Mechanics For Better Execution.
Build a strong foundation in shooting mechanics, including proper stance, grip, weight transfer, and follow-through.
Increase Shot Power to Enhance Scoring Potential.
Strengthen muscles crucial for shooting, such as the core, legs, and wrists and learnin proper weight transfer and stick flexion maximizes the power imparted to the puck.
Improve Accuracy to Score More Goals.
Learn to place shots in difficult spots for goalies to reach, such as top corners or just above the pads.
Develop a Quick Release.
Learn to reduce shot preparation time, giving goalies less chance to react.
Enhance Deception Skills.
Incorporate fakes, feints, and angle changes to outmaneuver defenders and goalies.
Create Scoring Opportunities.
Learn strategies to open up shooting lanes and capitalize on screen situations.

Two-Phase Approach to Shot Development.
From Foundation to Advanced Game-Ready Skills
Phase 1. Foundational Mechanics
In Phase 1, we concentrate on establishing and refining the fundamental components of the shooting process. The objective is to ensure that players not only understand but can consistently execute the essential principles of effective shooting mechanics. This phase focuses on:
Proper Hockey Stance
Weight Transfer
Stick Flex and Grip
Puck Loading and Placement
Driving Hands and Release Mechanics
Follow-Through and Accuracy
Phase 2. Advanced Techniques and Situational Application
Customized Drills
Combination Moves
Decision-Making Exercises
In Phase 2, we build upon the foundational skills by introducing more advanced techniques and applying them in game-like scenarios. This phase aims to enhance a player’s versatility and effectiveness during actual gameplay. Key components include:
Variety of Shots:
- Advanced Shot Types: Learning and refining snap shots, slap shots, backhand shots, and shots from both legs.
- Shot Selection: Understanding when and how to use different shots effectively.
Deception Moves:
- Fakes and Feints: Incorporating body and stick fakes to deceive goaltenders and defenders.
- Delayed Releases: Mastering the timing of shot releases to catch opponents off-guard.
Position-Specific Movements:
- Tailoring shooting techniques to the player’s on-ice position (e.g., defensemen taking point shots, forwards executing quick in-close shots).
- Footwork Integration: Combining skating strides with shooting for fluid in-motion shots.
In-Game Situational Shooting:
- Pressure Simulation: Practicing shooting under simulated game pressure to improve decision-making.
- Angle and Distance Variation: Adjusting shots based on different positions relative to the net.
- Rebound Control: Working on shots that produce favorable rebounds or second-chance opportunities.
SkillsLab Shooting Programs
At RHA Hockey Academy, we specialize in two primary shot development programs based on shot type: the wrist shot and the snap shot. Each of these shots requires a distinct technical foundation and progression path, which is why we’ve designed separate programs tailored to their unique mechanics.
Why Separate Programs?
- Distinct Techniques: The wrist shot and snap shot involve different mechanics and require separate training approaches to master each effectively.
- Age Appropriateness: Younger players often lack the physical development needed for the snap shot, so starting with the wrist shot ensures they build a solid foundation.
- Targeted Progression: By tailoring our two-phase development approach to each shot type, we help players progress systematically, focusing on the skills most relevant to their current level.
Wrist Shot Course
Phase 1:
Foundational Mechanics
6 Sessions
Ideal for players of all ages, especially younger players who are developing fundamental skills.
Focuses on building a strong foundation in shooting mechanics, including proper stance, grip, weight transfer, and puck control.
Phase 1 emphasizes mastering the basics to ensure players understand and can perform essential techniques effectively.
Snap Shot Course
Phase 1:
Foundational Mechanics
6 Sessions
Geared towards older or more advanced players who have developed sufficient strength and coordination.
Addresses the quick-release mechanics unique to the snap shot, requiring different techniques compared to the wrist shot.
Phase 1 concentrates on the specific mechanics of the snap shot, such as minimal wind-up, rapid weight transfer, and stick flexion.
